About Northern Backcountry
Real Adventures. Wild Places. Honest Experiences.
Welcome to Northern Backcountry
I’m Cooper, the person behind Northern Backcountry — an outdoor adventure platform built around a passion for wilderness exploration, canoeing, backcountry camping, and wildlife.
Based in Eastern Canada, I spend much of my free time exploring the remote lakes, rivers, and forests of Northeast Appalachia and beyond.
For me, the best adventures usually begin where the pavement ends. There’s something about loading up a canoe, heading into unfamiliar wilderness, and spending a few days disconnected from everyday life that keeps me coming back.
Whether it’s paddling a remote river, camping along an isolated shoreline, or encountering wildlife in its natural habitat, I’m always looking for new places to explore and experiences worth sharing.
How Northern Backcountry Started
Northern Backcountry began as a way to document my adventures through photography and video.
What started as sharing moments from the outdoors has gradually grown into a community of people who appreciate wild places, outdoor adventure, and the experiences that come with exploring them.
Today, Northern Backcountry is where I share trip reports, wilderness photography, outdoor experiences, and equipment reviews.
My goal is simple: to inspire people to get outside, explore more, and discover what lies beyond the beaten path.
Adventures, Equipment & Real-World Experience
A big part of backcountry travel is learning what works — and sometimes finding out what doesn’t.
Over the years, I’ve developed a strong appreciation for reliable outdoor equipment. Whether it’s a canoe, shelter, pair of boots, or another piece of gear, I believe the best way to evaluate equipment is to put it to use in real conditions.
Through Northern Backcountry, I share honest gear reviews, practical advice, and firsthand experiences from my adventures.
I occasionally collaborate with outdoor equipment manufacturers to test and showcase their products. Some gear may be provided or loaned by brands, and some links on this website may earn affiliate commissions.
These relationships help support future adventures and content, but my opinions and experiences remain my own.
The Adventure Continues
Northern Backcountry is still growing, and there’s plenty of wilderness left to explore.
Through this website, I hope to share more detailed trip reports, backcountry routes, equipment reviews, and stories from the places I visit.
Whether you’re planning your next canoe trip, researching outdoor gear, or simply enjoy following wilderness adventures, I’m glad you’re here.
Thanks for following along. See you out there. - Cooper
Behind the journal

The view and the details.
Photography, adventures and gear belong to the same story: making time for the outdoors.
Northern Backcountry brings those interests together in one journal. Browse outdoor observations, make room for photography and consider what matters when choosing equipment.
